Evidence based therapy approaches for emotional health

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps people manage overwhelming emotions, build stronger relationships and reduce harmful behaviours. At Vivamus, DBT is offered by highly trained professionals who provide ethical, compassionate and non-judgemental care.

DBT can help you feel more in control, more balanced and better equipped to cope with life’s challenges.

What is DBT?

DBT combines practical skills with supportive therapy to help you stay in the present moment, manage distress, regulate emotions and navigate relationships more effectively.

It was originally developed for people facing significant emotional difficulties, but DBT can be helpful for a range of concerns, including:

  • Personality difficulties
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Substance use
  • Eating disorders

At Vivamus, DBT is tailored to your individual needs, with an emphasis on safety, collaboration and meaningful progress.

What does DBT involve?

DBT at Vivamus is a commitment-based therapy that typically includes:

  • Individual sessions focused on your specific challenges and goals
  • Skills training to build confidence in managing emotions, distress and relationships

DBT usually involves attending for at least six months, with two sessions per week. You will work closely with your psychologist to set clear goals and agree on the most suitable approach.

For some clients, a shorter skills-focused programme or a different therapy, such as CBT, may be recommended instead.

Skills covered in DBT

In DBT, you will learn and practise skills in four key areas:

Interpersonal effectiveness: Strengthening relationships, setting boundaries and asking for help when needed

Mindfulness: Staying in the present moment and reducing the impact of painful memories or worries about the future

Distress tolerance: Managing crises and difficult emotions without making things worse

Emotion regulation: Building emotional balance and reducing vulnerability to emotional pain
